Take the Next Step

So, at this point you know that it’s important to have faith and that your faith needs to be based on what is true—not on what you feel. The next thing to do is to take a step, make a move, and do the thing that God has asked you to do without paying attention to the feelings that go along with it. So, you take the step and try to leave your feelings behind. But then guess what happens next. Your feelings follow you!

This might be a little hard to understand, so let me give you an example. The Bible says that you are to love your enemies and pray for those who treat you badly. If you choose by faith to do a kind action to someone you think of as your enemy—say, a kid who has been mean to you—your feeling of kindness toward that person will one day be stronger than the feelings of hatred, anger, or bitterness that you feel. Your feelings will eventually catch up with your actions if you continue to be kind to that person.

Now, this doesn’t mean that being bullied is okay. Bullying takes many forms—physical as well as emotional—and all forms of bullying are hurtful. If someone is hurting you, you need to go right away and talk to an adult who can help you. But along the way, continue to show kindness to the person who’s calling you names or trying to turn your friends against you. Do it through faith!
